St Peter Claver College is Roman Catholic school located in the suburb of Riverview in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was founded in 1976, and was named after St Peter Claver, patron Saint of slaves.[1]
The College is named in honour of the Spanish Jesuit priest and Saint, Peter Claver, who spent forty years of his life attending to the physical and spiritual needs of African and Indian slaves in Colombia, Latin America.[1]
St Peter Claver’s life work demonstrated the importance of practical work among the poor, speaking out for social justice and outreach into other racial and ethnic communities as a way of living the Gospel. The example of St Peter Claver has a mentoring influence on all policies and practices at the College. Principles of inclusion, tolerance, social justice and outreach are very appropriate for the diverse social and ethnic communities served by the College.[1]
The other significant spiritual influence on the College comes from the Marist Brothers and the example of Marcellin Champagnat. The Marist Brothers have been involved in the school from early in its history and various brothers fulfilled the role of Principal for many years.[1]
The tradition of Catholic education that is known as "Marist" was initiated by a French priest, Marcellin Champagnat, in 1817. Today, Marist schools are found in over seventy countries around the world, leading hundreds of thousands of young people to be what Marcellin believed each of them could become, good Christians and good citizens.[1]
The College motto of Concern, Love and Justice draws from the examples of St Peter Claver and Marcellin Champagnat.[1]
The foundation Principal of the school was Mr Bob Cullen who served here for ten years. The Marist Brothers have been involved in the school from very early in its history but it was only after Mr Cullen’s transfer to the Catholic Education Office that the Marist Brothers were asked to supply a Principal. Brother Kenneth Welsh, Brother Dominic O’Sullivan, Brother Peter Carroll have been appointed as Principals to St Peter Claver College.[1]
Following the Brothers, the College has had three lay Principals - Mr Michael Carroll, Mr Kerry Mulkerin and our present Principal, Mr Diarmuid O'Riordan. [1]
